Accounts, portfolios, insurance policies, photographs, contracts, access to business systems. Much of it now exists only behind a password nobody else knows.

Structure

Two keys One vault

The vault contents are wrapped twice: Once with your master password, once with the emergency key. Both open the same contents, neither reveals the other.

Long, unique and known only to you. It is stored nowhere and cannot be recovered.

For your heirs

Emergency key

Shown exactly once and meant for paper, kept together with your will. It is the most important safeguard.

  • Encryption in the browser only

    AES-256-GCM with Argon2id for key derivation. The server stores ciphertext only and never sees plaintext.

  • A printable emergency envelope

    A printable sheet carrying the emergency key and clear instructions for your heirs. Paper outlives every provider.

  • Dead man's switch

    If the vault is not opened for longer than a set period, the registered heirs automatically receive a message with the release.

  • Backup and restore

    An encrypted backup as a single file, plus a script for an external target such as a NAS or a USB drive.

  • Local, off the network

    The service binds to 127.0.0.1 only and cannot be reached from the network. No data leaves the device.

Worth knowing

A supplement to a will Not a replacement

Clu: Tresor supplements a will. The application is not a will itself and does not replace a notarised last will and testament. It makes sure that the last will remains technically enforceable.

The dead man's switch only checks while the application is running. The primary safeguard therefore remains the printed emergency envelope, deliberately so.

Frequent questions

What you should know before setting it up

What happens if I forget my master password?

Then you open the vault with the emergency key from the printed envelope. If neither exists any more, the contents stay locked for good. That is not a weakness, it is the heart of the method: There is no recovery path that an attacker could use either.

Where is my data kept?

Solely on your device, in a data folder you can inspect and copy at any time. To make a backup it is enough to copy that folder, or you use the backup export inside the application.

How will my heirs find out about it?

Through the printed emergency envelope you keep together with your will. In addition you can set up the dead man's switch, which automatically sends a message to the registered heirs after a period you choose without a sign in.

Is the application deleted when I uninstall it?

No, the data folder is deliberately kept. A digital estate must not disappear as a side effect of an uninstall. Anyone who really wants to remove the data deletes the folder by hand afterwards.

How do I get Clu: Tresor?
